Goodbye Fenwick Pier?
For those unfamiliar with the landmark mentioned in the title, Fenwick Pier is a point of arrival for US servicemen whose ships make a stopover in Hong Kong.
While it sounds as if it is exclusive to US navy officers and men, it is not. For years, its Fleet Arcade shops have been selling goods and have restaurants (notably Quarterdeck Restaurant). What attracted me most is that popular magazines are sold at cover prices to the delight of a few friends, notably Karen. I did buy some magazines there too, but it was quite some time ago.
The reason I was asking is it is because there is a plan to demolish it as part of the Central waterfront and be replaced by public landing steps and a park. Central waterfront by the way is synonymous to the undergoing construction of the bridge that links Central and Wan Chai. Whether demolishing the Fenwick Pier or moving it elsewhere remains a question, but I think it's the latter that weighs more.
The plan is that the pier and Fleet Arcade will be replaced by a public park after reclamation for the Central-Wan Chai bypass is completed.
But the reclamation is on hold because of a judicial review challenging whether a 10.7-hectare temporary reclamation is necessary to build the bypass, originally scheduled for completion in 2016.
