iPhone 3G coming to HK

Hong Kong will be one of the 21 markets that will launch Apple's iPhone 3G product launch on 11th of July.

"We're launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price," Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said.

How much is that price we're talking about? Apple cut the price of the iPhone to US$199 (HK$1,552) from US$399 for the 2.5G version, which was launched in June last year but was never officially released in Hong Kong. At about HK$1,500 that's the same cost as my latest Nokia phone purchased.

Eight gigabyte (US$199) and 16GB (US$299) models will be available. The phones will run on high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) - also known as 3.5G - cellular networks, which can achieve data transmission speeds of up to 14.4 megabits per second.

With more features, more slim design and cheaper price tag, it looks so irresistable. But the downside to this is that telecommunications companies may lock subscribers for long commitments and charge expensive tariffs.

So what will Blackberry owners think about this? The new model has a global positioning system, supports Microsoft Exchange and runs hundreds of third-party applications that will put it in competition with smartphone leader BlackBerry.
