Philippine Arts Festival 2008

Filipinos in Hong Kong are sometimes (if not often) associated with domestic helpers. But more that these noble household, children and elderly caretakers, Hong Kong is also home to artists. Closely related to interior designers, singers, architects and engineers, these artists showcase the Filipino ingenuity.

In what could be a fitting celebration to the 110th anniversary of the Philippine independence on 12th of June, the Philippine Arts Festival, now in its third year, is currently underway at the Peak Galleria. It features 40 artists, a few of whom are my friends here in Hong Kong.

Joel Ferraris: A fellow member of the Couples For Christ Hong Kong community, his works are famous all over Hong Kong. One time I came to his Tsuen Wan flat partly transformed into an art studio. Unfinished canvass, cans of paint, brushes and unmistakable works of art are ubiquitous in his humble abode. While his artworks is for everyone to see, CFC for example is a beneficiary of his talents. His larger than life collage and paintings grace the backdrop of a CFC anniversary or special events. On other occasions, his work were grand prizes for certain contests.

My other friends in the 40-strong group include Ben Guia, Peter Mercado and Babari Gozum. They have been passionate about art and photography and I am glad to have witnessed some of them. Great work buddies!

I aim to visit the works of Philippine Arts Festival on display soon. Mabuhay!
